Entry Requirements
The WIO‑COMPAS Certification Programme is designed to recognise and elevate professionals who have demonstrated commitment, experience, and excellence in managing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
Each certification level has its own unique entry criteria, reflecting the skills, knowledge, and leadership expected at that stage of a professional’s journey.
While academic qualifications are important, proven real‑world performance matters most — certification at a lower level can count towards meeting academic requirements for the next level.
Level 1 – Marine Field Operations
For the dedicated protectors on the frontline of marine conservation.
You must have:
• 2+ years of hands‑on experience in practical MPA operations
• Written proficiency in the language of certification assessment (country‑specific)
• Completion of Secondary Level Education
You must have:
• 2+ years of hands‑on experience in practical MPA operations
• Written proficiency in the language of certification assessment (country‑specific)
• Completion of Secondary Level Education
Level 2 – Site Management
For leaders managing teams, operations, and conservation outcomes at the site level.
You must have:
• 3+ years of experience in a Level 2 MPA management role
• Written proficiency in the language of certification assessment
• Completion of Secondary Level Education and/or Level 1 certification
You must have:
• 3+ years of experience in a Level 2 MPA management role
• Written proficiency in the language of certification assessment
• Completion of Secondary Level Education and/or Level 1 certification
Level 3 – Policy & Planning
For visionary leaders shaping marine strategy, policy, and governance.
You must have:
• 5+ years of experience in a Level 3 MPA management role
• Written proficiency in an official language
• A Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree and/or Level 2 certification
You must have:
• 5+ years of experience in a Level 3 MPA management role
• Written proficiency in an official language
• A Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree and/or Level 2 certification
