From Field to Global Forums: Tima’s Journey with WIO-COMPAS
How a Marine Ranger from Msambweni Earned Global Recognition Through Certification
A Childhood by the Ocean
Growing up just 500 meters from the ocean in Msambweni, Kenya, Tima Dago’s connection to the sea was deeply personal. Days were filled with harvesting oysters, collecting shells, and observing the rhythm of the tides. That early relationship with the marine world shaped a lifelong mission — protecting marine ecosystems.
Now a Marine Ranger with the Kenya Wildlife Service at Malindi MPA, Tima dedicates her life to safeguarding the same waters she grew up with.
Seeking Recognition for Field Experience
Despite years of fieldwork, community engagement, and enforcement patrols, Tima felt her skills were often invisible.
“I wanted my ground-based experience to be recognized in a structured, professional way.”
When she discovered WIO-COMPAS, it felt like the opportunity she had been waiting for — a way to validate her practical knowledge and open doors for career growth.
Certified — and Seen
Tima joined the Level 1 WIO-COMPAS Certification in 2019 in Mombasa, Kenya.
“The professionalism of the assessors really stood out. They were respectful and gave me space to reflect, consolidate my knowledge, and most importantly — to be seen and recognized.”
The experience was transformative. She didn’t just pass — she emerged with a renewed sense of confidence and purpose.
From Recognition to Global Opportunities
Certification wasn’t the end — it was the beginning of a powerful career shift:
- Promoted to Marine Corporal
- Received a Conservation Award from the Game Rangers Association of Africa (GRAA)
- Invited to international forums and trainings in Dar es Salaam, Mauritius, and Seychelles
- Completed Level 2 certification
- Awarded a place in a year-long artisanal mariculture training in Toliara, Madagascar
“These opportunities still feel surreal, but they all trace back to WIO-COMPAS.”
Impact Beyond Certification
Tima’s influence now extends beyond her MPA site:
- She contributed to the successful Hifadhi Blu grant for Mombasa MPA
- She actively engages in higher-level conservation planning
- She mentors others, proving that field experience, when recognised, can transform policy and planning
Why WIO-COMPAS Matters
