A Historic First —
WIO-COMPAS Launches Portuguese-Language Certification in Mozambique
Overview
In April 2025, the Western Indian Ocean Certification of Marine Protected Area Professionals (WIO-COMPAS)achieved a groundbreaking milestone by hosting its first-ever Portuguese-language certification event in Maputo, Mozambique. This event was not only historic in language inclusion but also pivotal in strengthening conservation capacity across the Lusophone regions of the Western Indian Ocean.
Challenge
Prior to this event, the majority of WIO-COMPAS certification processes were conducted in English, inadvertently limiting access for Portuguese-speaking marine conservation professionals, particularly those from Mozambique — a country rich in marine biodiversity and facing mounting coastal management challenges.
